Building signs are any sign or graphic attached to an exterior wall or window.  This can include an illuminated channel letter sign mounted prominently towards the top of the building and centered over the entrance or a window graphic.  Another term commonly used when referring to building signage is architectural signs.  These terms are used to describe a sign system that is installed on several buildings.  For example, signage for a large commercial park or apartment complex will likely have a unified appearance to create a unified look complementing the overall design.

Uses of Building & Architectural Sign Systems

Retail Shops

Retail shop building sign systems include storefront signs above the entrance and window decals displaying store operating hours. It may also include a more elaborate eye-catching display with window graphics promoting products and services.

Grand Opening / Coming Soon Signs

Building sign systems are critical in hospitals.  Visibility is a key considerations for creating an outdoor sign plan for hospitals.  Patients and visitors have potentially a lot on their mind and need highly visible and easy to read signs.  Having emergency and visitor entrances clearly marked is key to reducing any stress a patient or visitor might have finding their way.

Zoo’s / Adventure / Recreational Parks

Zoo and adventure park building sign systems include differention between directional or wayfinding signage and exhibit signage.  Directional signage serves the purpose of guiding visitors to restrooms, entrances, exits, and to exhibit areas.  It is important to avoid signs that appear too identical to the exhibit themes.  It is also important to match design to pole signs or free standing signs located at walk-ways and intersections.  Otherwise, guests may not see the sign resulted in frustration.
